Experimental Animation

In 2021, Collaborative Cataloging Japan (CCJ) received two grants to support the research, preservation, and public presentation project titled “Unearthing Japanese Experimental Animation of the 1960s and 1970s.” These grants have enabled CCJ to preserve film works by the graphic designer Keiichi Tanaami, as well as digitize selected works found in the Sogetsu Art Center archive.

In 2021, Collaborative Cataloging Japan (CCJ) received two grants from the Pola Art Foundation and Toshiba Foundation to support the research, preservation, and public presentation project titled “Unearthing Japanese Experimental Animation of the 1960s and 1970s.” These grants have enabled CCJ to preserve film works by the graphic designer Keiichi Tanaami, as well as digitize selected works found in the Sōgetsu Art Center archive.

Building on the Keiichi Tanaami Collection Survey in 2018, we are moving ahead with preserving selected works that were found to need urgent care. This preservation project is led by researcher Julian Ross, CCJ ED Ann Adachi-Tasch, and archivist John Klacsmann. The research on Sogetsu Art Center archive’s holdings is led by researcher Go Hirasawa and archivist Nobukazu Suzuki.

Screenings will be held in February 2022 at Lightbox Film Center, Philadelphia, and we are currently fundraising to produce a publication related to this research. More details will be posted as we move ahead.
